The Pantry and grants
2 min read
Everything in the Pantry is a grant. Here is what that means for your wallet.
Grandma does not post parcels. She hands you money for one specific thing and trusts you to buy it. Mostly.
Everything is a grant
The Pantry sells Hack Club Bank grants (HCB card grants). Pay in cookies, and a grant lands on a card that you use to buy the real thing yourself. We do not ship or fulfill anything.
Each item shows its price in cookies, what the grant is worth in dollars, and roughly how many hours of work that is. The hours vary, because every hour is worth a different amount of cookies.
A few items are handed over by hand instead, mostly jokes that are completely pointless on purpose. They are labeled.
Base grants and upgrades
- A base grant is the item itself, for example a plain tablet grant.
- Upgrade grants make the base grant bigger. They are never sold alone: you pick the base grant and add upgrades in the same step. Each upgrade you add raises the cookie price.
- Upgrades go onto the same HCB grant and each one is used once.
- An upgrade is never a better deal than the base grant, so you cannot buy the cheapest item and upgrade it into a bargain.
- Each upgrade says how many of it you can add.
Stackable or not
Some grants stack. You can buy AI credits again and again. Others do not: you only get one tablet. The item says which.
Prices in your region
There are no regional prices. A grant is the same price everywhere. The product, however, costs what it costs where you live:
- Cheaper in your region than the grant is worth? You cannot spend the leftover. The grant may only buy that specific product.
- Dearer in your region? Add upgrade grants until the grant covers it.
- Want something fancier than the item on the shelf, say a Samsung tablet instead of an iPad? Pick the base grant, share the link to the exact product, add enough upgrade grants and say what it is for. When the request is approved, you get the grant.
Prove what you are buying
Everything is a grant, so Grandma wants to see what the money is for before she hands it over. You will paste:
- the product link, and
- a screenshot of your real cart with taxes, shipping and everything included.
Tip
Screenshot the whole cart, not just the price. If the total is not visible, the screenshot does not count.
Buying one
You need an account and you need to have met Grandma (the welcome chat). Then every card in the Pantry has a button, and the cookies come out of your jar when you press it. Grandma checks what you sent, and when she is happy she hands over the grant. If she is not, your cookies come back.
Once a grant has been issued, cookies are usually not given back. Sometimes it makes sense, so ask in #grandma-help and a person will look at it case by case.
